We all have a love-hate relationship with burpees #amiright? However, there’s a reason why every fitspo includes them in their training guides. Whether you’re in the best shape of your life or haven’t worked out in five years, burpees will quickly burn fat and exhaust every muscle in your body (even the muscles you didn’t know you had!) They are one of the greatest strength building moves in our fitness arsenal, despite being one of the most challenging exercises to perform in repetition.
Regardless of whether you love them or hate them, don’t skip your burpees. I know it’s tempting, but skipping burpees means missing out on some very key benefits in your physical training. Here are just a few of those benefits:
Burpees are a Full Body Exercise
They engage your core, legs, glutes, chest, shoulders, arms and back.
Burpees Mix Stability with Explosive Power
Burpees require quickly moving between planks and vertical jumps, which classify them as both a stability and plyometrics exercise.
Burpees Burn Major Calories
Burpees immediately raise your respiratory rate, causing your body to consume more oxygen during exercise. This process stimulates your metabolism, which helps burn more calories even after you finish working out.
Burpees Can be Done Anywhere
Burpees are a bodyweight exercise that can be performed almost anywhere. If you're traveling, perform them in your hotel room. If you're at home with the kids, do burpees in your living room. I've even done them on the beach! No excuses.
Burpees are for Everyone
Your current level of physical fitness doesn't really matter when it comes to burpees. There are numerous burpee variations, ranging from beginner to advance, to ensure your body will always be challenged.
If you’re worried about your form, Kayla Itsines provides an amazing tutorial called “How to Better Your Burpees.” She also provides burpee modifications and progressions that will help you be a burpee-pro in no time!
